Membership in International Conventions

– Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), since February 19, 1998.

Protection

Definition: an industrial design must be new and possess practical applicability. 

Novelty: must be new in Ethiopia or abroad.

Filing requirements for an application (to be sent to a registered resident agent):
1. Legalized power of attorney;
2. A statement indicating the name, address, nationality and residence of the applicant(s)/creator(s);
3. 4 graphic representations or drawings (max. size 10 cm x 20 cm);
4. A printing block.
5. An indication of the kind of product for which the design is to be used.

Examination: formal and as to novelty.

Duration: five years from the filing date.

Renewal: for two consecutive periods of five years each.

Assignment and licenses: must be registered.
