Exceptions to protection: a model or design should not contain letters, words or numerals.

Beginning of protection: from the date of application.

Duration: five years.

Extension: possible twice for similar periods.

Working – compulsory licenses: not provided for.

Filing requirements for an application (to be sent to resident agents):
1. Power of attorney, legalized by a Consulate of Libya in the applicant’s home country or by any other Consulate of an Arab State in the absence of the Libyan Consulate in the applicant’s home country and authenticated by the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
2. A copy of the extract of the entry of the applicant’s company in the Commercial Register, or a copy of the Certificate of Incorporation if the applicant is a company or a corporate body, duly notarized, legalized and authenticated as above;
3. A deed of assignment from the inventor(s) if not employed by the applicant, duly legalized as above;
4. A certified Certificate of Employment if the inventor is an employee in the applicant’s company;
5. A copy of the specification and a summary and drawings of the invention in English and Arabic;
6. Certified copy of the priority document for a Convention application if priority is to be claimed.

Note: all documents should be submitted along with their Arabic translation, certified by a local translator and then authenticated by the Judicial Authorities Center (JAC).
