Protection

Registration is not required for owners of an original work. Copyright protection is automatic and free from the moment a work is created. 

Duration: (a) during the lifetime of the author, plus 70 years after his death or, in the case a work has two or more authors, from the year of death of the last surviving author; (b) for cinematographic works 70 years after the death of the last of the following to survive: the principal director, the author of the screenplay, the author of the dialogue or the composer of music specifically created for use in the cinematographic work; (c) for musical works with lyrics, when the lyrics and music have been specifically created for the work 70 years from the last surviving lyricist or composer, whether or not they have been appointed as the authors of the musical work with lyrics; (d) for works by an unknown author 70 years from the year in which it was made public; (e) for unpublished works, anyone who for the first time publishes or makes public a previously unpublished work or a work not made public, which has been protected under Finnish law and the protection of which has expired, shall obtain a right in the work. The right shall subsist until 25 years have elapsed from the year in which the work was published or made public.

Authority name: The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (www.prh.fi) monitors Finnish copyright collective management organizations from January 2017. There are seven organizations for collective management of copyright and related rights in Finland: Finnish Composers' Copyright Society Teosto ry, Copyright Society of Performing Artists and Phonogram Producers in Finland GRAMEX ry, Copyright Organization for Creative Work Kopiosto ry, Audiovisual Producers Finland - APFI ry, Copyright Society for Artists Working in Visual Arts Kuvasto ry, Finnish Literary Copyright Society Sanasto ry, and Näyttelijöiden tekijänoikeusjärjestö - Skådespelarnas upphovsrättsorganisation Filmex ry.
