Domain Names

– The Information Society Code 917/2014, in force since January 1, 2015. Its stipulations regarding Finnish domain names a.k.a. Chapter 21 on domain names, sections 295 and 312(2) and (3) are in force since September 5, 2016.

Applicant: registered Registrars on behalf of legal entities and individuals.

Restriction as to nationality: none.

Local presence: not required. 

Domestic trademark right: not required for obtaining domain name registration. A domain name can be two to sixty-three characters in length. It may include characters of the alphabet, a to ö, the numerals 0 to 9 and hyphens. According to the Information Society Code 917/2014, a domain name may not be illegally based on a protected name or mark registered by another entity. Protected names and marks are those registered in the Finnish Trade Register, Register of Associations or Register of Foundations, or marks registered in the Finnish or European Union Trade Mark Registers. Names of corporations in the public sector and names and marks established according to the Finnish Trade Name Law and Trademarks Act are also prohibited from registration.

Duration: one, three or five years.

Renewal/maintenance: one, three or five years, renewable.

Uniform dispute resolution procedure: none, but there is an administrative procedure before TRAFICOM.

Appeals from TRAFICOM's administrative decisions: appeal to the Market Court. Further appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court, should it grant leave to the further appeal. 

Civil dispute about ownership: to be brought before the Market Court. Further appeal in civil cases to the Supreme Court, should it grant leave to the further appeal.
