Domain Names

– New set of rules regarding the registration of domain names under the ccTLD .pt came into force on June 16, 2014.
– Regulations on Domain Names Registration .PT, in force since March 1, 2006.
– Minister’s Council Resolution No. 69/97 of May 5, 1997.

Filing

Country code top-level domain name: .pt 

Sub-domains: .com.pt; .edu.pt; .gov.pt; .org.pt 

Applicant: individuals, Portuguese companies registered at the Portuguese National Register of Companies, or foreign companies registered at their local National Register of Companies. For each sub-domain there are special rules concerning the applicant. 

Restriction as to nationality: none. 

Local presence: not required. 

Domestic trademark right: from May 1, 2012 no longer required for obtaining domain name registration.

Domain name can be registered as a trademark: yes (from May 1, 2012 a domain name application under .pt no longer needs to be based on a trademark registration).

Registration, Protection

Duration: one, three or five years.

Renewal/maintenance: one, three or five years, renewable.

Dispute about ownership: to be brought before the court or can be settled by arbitration at ARBITRARE (Arbitration Centre for Industrial Property, Domain Names, Companies and Designations) – for further information, please see www.arbitrare.pt 

Uniform dispute resolution procedure: none.
