Domain Names

There is no specific legislation although some regulations have been issued by NIC Argentina on the organization and management of country code top-level domain names.

Filing

Country code top-level domain name: .ar

Sub-domains: .com.ar; .net.ar; .tur.ar; .org.ar; .coop.ar; .mutual.ar; .musica.ar; .bet.ar; .gob.ar; .gov.ar; .mil.ar; .int.ar; .senasa.ar; .seg.ar; .edu.ar

Applicant: individuals and legal entities. (Note: special restrictions apply to sub-domains other than .com.ar and .net.ar. The sub-domain .edu.ar is restricted to educational entities and managed by the University Network Interconnection Association (Asociación Redes de Interconexion Universitaria – ARIU). 

Restriction as to nationality: none.

Local presence: not required.

Domestic trademark right: not required for obtaining domain name registration, but foreign registrants are required to declare a domicile in Argentina.

Domain name can be registered as a trademark: yes.

Registration, Protection

Duration: one year.

Renewal/maintenance: one year, renewable. Renewal applications should be filed within thirty days prior to the expiration date. A grace period of forty-five days is granted after expiration.

Dispute about ownership: to be brought before NIC Argentina and/or the courts. A claim may be filed before NIC Argentina based on a better legitimate interest than the domain name owner’s. NIC Argentina decides solely on the arguments set forth by each party. NIC Argentina’s decisions may be reviewed before the courts.

Uniform dispute resolution procedure: none, but an administrative procedure other than UDRP is available before NIC Argentina.
