There is no specific legislation although some regulations on the organization and management of country code top-level domain names do exist.

Filing

Country code top-level domain name: .jp 

Sub-domains: available (also available in Japanese).

Applicant: individuals and legal entities with a postal address in Japan.

Restriction as to nationality: none.

Local presence: required.

Domestic trademark right: not required for obtaining domain name registration.

Domain name can be registered as a trademark: yes.

Registration, Protection

Duration: one year.

Renewal/maintenance: one year, renewable.

Dispute about ownership: to be brought before the court.

Uniform dispute resolution procedure: available (variation of UDRP) before Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Center.

Protection of domain names under Unfair Competition Prevention Law: an act of obtaining or holding a right to use a domain name identical or similar to other person’s names, trade names, trademarks, marks or other indications of goods or a service pertaining to the person’s business or using such a domain name, for the purpose of making an unfair profit or inflicting injury on other person will be vulnerable to an injunction, damages, or other sanctions under the Unfair Competition Prevention Law (as amended).
