Comoros was originally under Arab control until it became a French Protectorate in the 19th century and proclaimed as a French colony in 1912. The Comoros achieved self-government in 1961 and independence on July 6, 1975. Comoros has endured more than 20 coups or attempted coups since gaining independence from France.
The country’s economy is mainly based on agriculture (approximately 80%).
