The State of Qatar occupies a peninsula of about 11,586 sq. km, projecting true north into the Gulf for approximately 160 km with a maximum width of 90 km. There are also several islands, the most important of which is Halul, some 110 km off the east coast, which is used as a storage center and tanker terminal for offshore oil fields. Qatar’s landward frontiers at the neck of the peninsula lie with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the west and the United Arab Emirates to the southeast. Doha, the capital city, commercial center and main port, is on the eastern shore of the peninsula.
