A former French colony, part of French West Africa, Ivory Coast obtained its internal administrative autonomy and became a member of the French Community in 1958 and later obtained its full independence on August 7, 1960.
Manganese and diamonds are mined on a small scale. Mainly agricultural, electric power, lumbering and industrialization (preserved food, oil, soaps) are being promoted.
The officially named “Côte d’Ivoire” is a liberal republic.
