It was subsequently divided between the French and the British by a mandate of the League of Nations and became a trusteeship territory of the United Nations on September 14, 1946. Togo became autonomous and a member of the French Community in 1958 and achieved its full independence on April 27, 1960.

The economy is mainly agricultural (yams, manioc, cocoa). Iron ore deposits were discovered in the north-central region in 1967.

Togo is a republic.
