The country is witnessing major industrial and agricultural development efforts within the framework of successive development plans.
The country has large stretches of desert, but the fertile western portion has high agricultural potential, which is being increasingly utilized. Many roads and infrastructure projects are being built.
Industries include the mining of phosphate and potash, fertilizers, oil refining, cement and building materials, paper and cardboard, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, furniture, pipes, paints, food processing and other light industries. Major industries now being established are potash to be extracted from the Dead Sea and a large chemical fertilizer plant. Rock phosphate, potash fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products are the main exports of the country.
