The Republic of Colombia is a Unitarian State governed by the Constitution of 1991.
Colombia is a country which is exceptionally endowed with natural resources as yet undeveloped. The climate is varied, tropical and rainy in the coastal plains to temperate in the Andes Mountains. At present, Colombia’s efforts are directed at creating a vigorous transformation in industry, mining and metallurgical activities. It ranks first in South America for the production of gold, first in the world for the production of coffee, second in America for the production of platinum, third in the world for the production of bananas. Agriculture and cattle raising are the most important occupations. Colombia offers the biggest coal reserves in South America. These reserves have been estimated in the order of 175 million tons, of which 125 million tons are located in Cerrejón deposits (Guajira Department).
