Haiti is situated in the western part of the island known as Hispaniola, the second largest of the Greater Antilles, lying between Cuba in the west and Puerto Rico in the east. Haiti covers about one third of the island, the rest of the territory belongs to the Dominican Republic. The majority of the population is black, but a small proportion is mulattos descended from former French settlers.
