Economic conditions
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is an industrial, financial and distribution center in the Far East. Its major exports are articles of apparel, clothing accessories, textile fabric, toys and dolls, watches and clocks, electronic components and parts for computers and household type electrical and non-electrical equipment.
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Hong Kong was worth U.S.$ 407.11 billion in 2024, according to official data from the World Bank. The GDP value of Hong Kong represents 0.38% of the world economy. The Hong Kong economy continued to expand solidly in the second quarter of 2025, mainly driven by the strong performance of external sector and improved domestic demand, with real GDP increasing by 3.1% year-on-year, picking up slightly from the growth of 3% in the first quarter.
Hong Kong is a global offshore RMB business hub. According to SWIFT, Hong Kong was the largest offshore RMB clearing centre as of August 2025, handling about 76% of the world’s RMB payments.
Political conditions
On July 1, 2017, the National Development and Reform Commission of China, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region signed the Framework Agreement on Deepening Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation in the Development of the Greater Bay Area (“the Agreement”). And immediately after the signing of the agreement, the development of the Greater Bay Area (“GBA”) was officially launched. The GBA comprises of the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao and nine municipalities in Guangdong province. This region covers an area of around 56,000 sq. km. The total population in the Greater Bay Area is over 87 million and the GDP was over U.S.$ 1.8 trillion in 2024. The GBA project is one of the key strategic initiatives adopted by the Chinese government with a view to linking and reinforcing the roles of Hong Kong, Macao and the nine municipalities in Guangdong, and transforming this region to be a first-class bay area and world-class city cluster ideally for living, working and travelling.
The Hong Kong National Security Law (HKNSL) came in force on June 30, 2020. Over the past five years, the business environment has continuously improved in Hong Kong. In 2025, Hong Kong has been ranked as the world’s freest economy and the third-largest global financial center.
