The country has valuable forests and some gold is mined, but it is essentially a land of agriculture and stockbreeding. On the broad tropical plains of the east coast, bananas and sugar cane are cultivated. The chief imports are textiles, machinery, chemicals and flour; the chief exports are coffee, cotton, sugar, bananas, timber, meat and hides.
The prevailing religion is Roman Catholicism.
