Great Britain established the Protectorate of Uganda in 1890 and Uganda obtained its independence on October 9, 1962.

Administration: the Republic of Uganda has only one Parliament and Courts; the Supreme Court is in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. In 1995, the government restored the legal system to one based on English common law and customary law; it accepts compulsory ICJ jurisdiction, with reservations.

Legislation: The Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, 2006, in force since August 4, 2006, has been put in place and provides protection to literary, scientific and artistic intellectual works and their neighboring rights.
